I truly believe that music creates tangible memories in our lives. Some people quote famous authors and thinkers, but I’ve always quoted song lyrics. Done well, lyrics and music are inspiring and impassioned and transport you to another place in time.
It’s why that first song you dance to at your wedding is so important. Why just the right play list can make or break a road trip. Why the first few notes of a song can take you right back to that first kiss, first love and first break up.
Music has defined my life, and I love watching my kids begin to develop their own sense of what’s ‘cool’ (Kongos, Imagine Dragons, Christina Perry and a few 80’s hair bands) and what’s so totally not (country music, opera and anything by a boy band).
Jack and Makenna have developed their own Spotify playlists and insist that they cannot do tedious schoolwork, like Math or handwriting practice, without the music blasting through their headphones. Dylan isn’t quite sold, but he does believe in the ability of the perfectly executed song to ‘pump him up’ before a football game – his usual go to is “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns & Roses.
No matter what, music will always be a part of my life, and I’m thankful for access to incredible musicians who create it, like my husband.
While I wish I was writing a post about his upcoming performance at the Victoria, my job today is to get you excited about another fabulous songwriter and performer – JD Souther.
Souther has collaborated with countless world-renowned musicians including Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Don Henley, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Paul Williams, Burt Bacharach, Dixie Chicks, India Arie, Roy Orbison, George Strait, Brian Wilson, Trisha Yearwood and many, many more. Some of his hits include “You’re Only Lonely,” “Heartache Tonight,” “Best of My Love,” “The Heart of the Matter,” and “Faithless Love.”
Wow! Don’t miss this fantastically talented artist and see what song might always remind you of the night you spent celebrating beautiful music.
